Today we shine our Alumni Spotlight on Herbert Mi from China. After graduating from 涩里番 and transferring to through the University Transfer program, Herbert now works as an Academic Advisor at 涩里番.
Herbert recalls that while he excelled in science subjects like math and chemistry during high school, he initially struggled with English upon joining 涩里番. However, the college provided a structured pathway through courses such as English 099, English 100, and English 101, allowing him to strengthen his language skills without needing additional tests like IELTS.
Choosing 涩里番 was heavily influenced by the recommendation of family friends, highlighting its strong reputation and excellent track record of transferring credits to top universities like UBC. Herbert particularly appreciated that nearly all courses at 涩里番 were fully transferable, allowing students to explore various fields, from computer science to sociology and psychology, before deciding on a major.
Herbert emphasized the importance of student support services at 涩里番, especially the Writing and Learning Centre, which offered friendly and accessible English tutoring.
During his time at 涩里番, Herbert gained valuable work experience as a student worker, which later helped him secure employment after graduating from UBC.
Herbert encourages new students not to hesitate in seeking help or participating in activities, assuring them that the staff at 涩里番 are welcoming and supportive.
